Sioux Falls, S.D.(KELO AM) - The Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire shortly after 12:00 am. The first arriving crew reported that the deck on the back of the structure was fully engulfed in flames and fire was also visible through the basement windows and on the main floor.
Crews were able to get the fire under control after about twenty minutes and remained on scene performing overhaul and extinguishing hot spots for another two hours. A fire watch was established to monitor the property overnight.
Fire Inspectors were on scene to determine the cause of the fire and will continue their investigation today. They noted that the home did not have a residential sprinkler system.
The residents had escaped from the structure before SFFR arrived. They were uninjured but the family dog perished in the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters.
SFFR reminds homeowners to practice an escape plan with their families. Knowing where to go during a fire can save your life.
