SIOUX FALLS, S.D,. (KELO AM) -  A Sioux Falls woman lost almost $4,000 in a telephone scam when she was told her son had an I-R-S violation and for a fee the caller would make the charges go away.

Officer Sam Clemens says the 60-year-old woman wired green dot card numbers to the scammer.

Clemens says green dot cards are a red flag in any scams.  He says legitimate businesses don't accept them.  He says cons are relying more heavily on the cards as a way to bilk victims out of money.

Clemens says the suspect called the victim again saying there were court costs but she didn’t send more cards.

He added that the I-R-S never contacts you by phone only through the mail.
