Huether says "Enough is enough"

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether says we got through the storm last night but the wastewater treatment plant never worked harder.

Huether angrily addressed homeowners still pumping sump-pump water into the sanitary sewer.  Saying "Enough is enough" Huether encouraged homeowners to pump water outside their house preferably into the storm sewer.

Huether encouraged residents that if they know their neighbor is pumping water into the floor drain to tell them to stop.  If you can't, Huether said, contact the city and they'll contact your neighbor.

Huether says Sioux Falls was fortunate that heavier rain fell south of town.

Sioux Falls Public Works Director Mark Cotter says the sanitary sewer system was over-taxed last night.

Cotter says only five sump pumps discharging water can overwhelm an eight inch sewer line.

Cotter also asks that you don’t water lawns because, believe it or not, he saw irrigation systems working this morning.
