Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - Fourth of July weekend is on the way, which means a lot of people will be heading to the beach or pool.  Some people will come away with an illness from those excursions.

Health officials say the best way to keep from getting sick is by not letting germs into the water first, even in chlorinated pools.

The Centers for Disease Control has some advice for swimmers.  First of all, do not swallow pool or lake water.  Practice good hygiene by showering with soap before using the pool, and washing hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. If you have diarrhea, stay out of the water.

Other common sense items include taking young children on frequent bathroom breaks and change diapers in the bathroom, not at the side of the pool or on the beach.
