Dell Rapids, SD (KELO AM) - Dell Rapids St Mary’s volleyball coach Nate Alfson says the outpouring of support for his decision to announce that he is gay has been outstanding. Alfson, the Pipestone, MN native and former Augustana College athlete is believed to be the first South Dakota high school coach to come out as gay. He told KWSN’s Craig and Chris that he did not expect his announcement to become a major news story, and added that several of his coworkers at the school have known about his sexual orientation for quite some time.
Alfson says he is not concerned about his status as the Cardinals’ volleyball coach, saying several parents and athletes have given him a vote of confidence. Officials from the school have yet to comment on the matter, and Alfson says he never signed a contract or agreement binding him to a Catholic code of conduct.
