SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Minnehaha County Commission today approved hiring TSP Architects in Sioux Falls for jail planning, site development and cost estimate.

Sheriff Mike Milstead says the county needs more jail beds.  Milstead says there's no secret that the County doesn't have the money for a new jail.  He says a tax increase for a new jail is going to be a tough sale but he believes citizens will understand that there's an increase in the number of felons going to jail.

He says the county is monitoring or supervising more people outside of jail than there are inmates in the jail.  The issue is not just a new jail but also of where corrections is headed.

The Commission also appointed Assistant Sheriff Michelle Boyd as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee working on jail and correction issues.
