SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota’s pheasant numbers are up 75 percent from last year when hunters spent $140 million during the season.
Senior Upland Game Biologist Travis Runia says early hunting can be challenging. Runia says big corn fields of course demand larger groups. He says smaller groups can work smaller fields and can work the grass edges at the end of the day.
Runia says if you’re hunting on game or waterfowl production areas you must use non-toxic shot.
He says road hunters should pull the vehicle over, turn it off and close the doors before firing at birds.
Many out-of-shape and aging hunters will take to the field tomorrow testing their heart health.
Gary Myers, with the American Heart Association, says hunters need to look out for one another. Meyers says watch for shortness of breath, a feeling of tighness in the chest and an abnormal tiredness.
Myers says call 9-1-1 immediately and wait for the ambulance to start treatment.
