Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) The City of Sioux Falls is reducing the speed limit and adding a new safety median on increasingly busy West 26th Street where two brothers were killed in a car crash last month.
The speed limit will be reduced immediately on 26th from Shirly Avenue to Marion Road from 45 to 35 mph. The new median will prevent dangerous traffic movement near St. Michaels Church in the area where the fatal crash occured.
The reduced speed limit will create a consistent speed limit from I-29 to the City's growing western edge. Public Works Director Mark Cotter says this area has seen more development and therefore increasing traffic.
Police Chief Doug Barthel says officers will be closely monitoring the area...and taking enforcement measures as needed.
71 year old Richard Krenke and his 76 year old brother, John Krenke died in a crash last month while driving from the parking lot of a Hy-Vee store and attempting to cross over 26th to St. Michaels Church. Richard's wife, standing at the church, saw the crash happen.
