PIERRE, SD – Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that Joy Ann Sherman, 52, Mitchell, has passed away in a Sioux Falls hospital as a result of the injuries she received from the November 8, 2014 officer involved shooting incident.
Police were called to a Mitchell motel that night for a report of a woman threating to harm herself and others. They found Sherman barricaded in her room with a gun. When she pointed the gun at officers, they shot and wounded her.It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
The Division of Criminal Investigation continues its investigation into this incident. At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General, Davison County States Attorney and the Mitchell Police Department for a final determination on the officers' action. The release of the summary report is anticipated within 30 days.
