Brandon, SD (KELO AM) - The city council of Brandon discussed the growing community’s wastewater treatment options tonight, including the possibility of building a nearly 100 acre open-air lagoon between Sioux Falls and Brandon. Sioux Falls mayor Mike Huether was in attendance, and while he says the decision lies in the hands of the citizens and lawmakers of Brandon, he would rather see the city continue its current agreement to send waste to the Sioux Falls treatment plant.
“We just think that there’s a much better way to do it” said Huether. “One that would be much more environmentally friendly, still maximize taxpayer dollar, as well as work in a more cooperative fashion regionally to support the wastewater needs of not only Brandon and Sioux Falls, but the entire area.” Currently Brandon sends its wastewater to the Sioux Falls treatment plant, which Huether says is beneficial for both parties especially considering the growth of the area and extensive government regulations.
According to Huether there has been a few potential lagoon site discussed, including one near Hussets Speedway. He said no matter where a lagoon would be located; it would be near growing areas of Sioux Falls or Brandon.
“Again, we understand that it is ultimately their decision, and we respect that” Hueter emphasized.
