SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The House State Affairs committee today approved a measure preventing the South Dakota High School Activities Association from allowing transgender students to participate in high school athletics according to their gender identification.
Mark Chase with Family Policy Council spoke for the bill. Chase says transgender "confusions" should be treated as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and "prevention."
A lobbyist for the Activities Association says it’s time to prepare for the transgender student athlete. She says it's going to be a major civil rights issue for sports programs and educational institutions.
The bill goes to the House with a do pass recommendation.
