SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The South Dakota Senate, on an 18 to 17 vote, today passed a bill establishing a bureau to collect the state’s debt.
Senator Arthur Rusch of Vermillion says $125 million is owed to the state.
Rusch says he knows the newly formed center won't be able to collect all of the state's debt but says it's time to stop kicking the can down the road.
The South Dakota Collectors Association spoke against the bill in committee saying that it will reduce their business. The state has past bad debt over to state collectors.
A less amended version earlier passed the House
