Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) Potentially toxic mercury leaking from a package forced a week-long shutdown of the main mail handling facility at Sioux Falls Regional Airport.
Airport Deputy Director Richard King says the leaking package was discovered Friday, May 1. He says the spill is now cleared up and air quality in the main facility is fine. Handling operations barely missed a beat during the clean up and air quality monitoring because they were simply moved to an adjoining building.
King says the public noticed no difference in service except for the owners of the undetermined number of packages in the same bin with the leaking package.
Federal investigators are on the case as it is against the law to mail mercury.
