SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -The findings from an investigation into April’s fatal house fire in Brandon are shocking.
Brandon Valley Police Chief Dave Kull says Valley Springs volunter firefighter Steve Ackerman's blood-alcohol level at the time of his death was .189. That's over twice the legal limit.
Kull says it was Ackerman who made the call to evacuate the burning house and that the two firefighters with hin were able to get out.
Kull says Ackeman and homeowner David Smith died of smoke inhalation.
The fire started in the vent pipe enclosure serving the water heater and furnace. Kull says over time the wood around the pipe can caronize enabling it to ignite under lower levels of heat.
