SIOUX FALLS (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire in a duplex at 1505½ S. Main Ave. The reporting party stated that the apartment had electrically issues earlier in the day and now the apartment was filling with smoke.
Fire crews arrived to find the glow of fire from a second story window and light smoke showing from the eaves. The tenant was able to self-evacuate prior to fire department arrival. The first crew on scene was able to extinguish the fire within the first seven minutes on scene.
Crews worked to remove wall and ceiling coverings from the second story unit of the duplex to confirm extinguishment. There was light smoke damage confined to the upstairs unit. No injuries were reported due to the fire. The building occupants were being assisted by the Red Cross. Initial crews reported working smoke detectors that had alarmed due to the smoke.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 4 fire trucks, 4 support vehicles, and 19 personnel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by Sioux Falls Police Department, Paramedics Plus Ambulance, Mid-American Energy, Xcel Energy, and the Red Cross.
As the weather warms up, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind residents to make sure that electrical circuits for any air conditioning units are designed to carry the additional load.
