SIOUX FALLS (KELO AM) - Major work has begun on the renovation of five parks in the Sioux Falls park system with aging infrastructure. The parks that will be renovated this summer and fall are Lacey, Bryant, Tower, Burnside, and Beadle Greenway parks.
As part of Mayor Huether’s continued emphasis on caring for existing parks, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation identified the top five parks in need and aggressively planned for their renovation. The renovations will cost approximately $1.16 million this year. The parks will remain open during construction, with the construction areas fenced and limited to the immediate area around the amenities being replaced or improved.
“The City of Sioux Falls wants to ensure that no matter where you live, what your income level is, or the name of your neighborhood, that your park has the same loving care and investments as others in town,” says Mayor Mike Huether.
The following is a description of the work to be done at each park and the projected construction schedule:
Lacey Park
Playground, basketball court, and picnic shelter replacement
Completion date: November 15
Bryant Park
Playground and basketball court replacement, grading work, and topsoil addition
Completion date: November 15
Tower Park
Playground and picnic shelter replacement and lighting improvements
Completion date: November 15
Beadle Greenway
Playground and basketball court replacement and new picnic shelter
Completion date: November 15
Burnside Park
Ballfield improvements, including new fencing, dugouts, realignment, and picnic shelter
Completion date: October 16
All of the amenities in the park system are inspected regularly and are programmed in Parks and Recreation’s cyclical replacement programs based on condition, age, and functionality. The cyclical programs are vital to maintaining the quality of the playgrounds, roads, parking lots, play courts, and picnic shelters in Sioux Falls parks. The Mayor’s proposed 2016‒2020 Capital Program includes an investment of $6.1 million in these cyclical programs over the next five years, which would make improvements in 26 parks throughout Sioux Falls.
