Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) The Minnehaha County Historical Society will hold a strategy session on Wednesday on how best to battle the re-naming of Powder House Road to Veterans Parkway.
The Society may mount a petition drive to let city voters decide. Society President Jim Carlson says the City Council was wrong to vote to change the name of the road on the east side of Sioux Falls. He says Powder House commemorates an explosion back in the 1930s so powerful that it registered on seismographs in California.
Carlson says there are many other roads in the city more appropriate to honor veterans, including Russell Street, the main way leading to Veterans Memorial Park.
The Society is inviting the public to the meeting Wednesday evening at 7 at the Sioux Falls downtown library.
City Counciler Greg Jamison, admitting he made a mistake supporting the name change, tried last week to get a re-vote but was unsuccessful.
