A new Sioux Falls Police Chief named today

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - He was appointed Assistant Police Chief last spring and today Matt Burns was endorsed by Nayor Mike Huether as the City’s next Chief of Police.

Huether says he wants Burns and current Chief Doug Barthel to work closely together until Barthel retires in October.

Burns began his career with Sioux Falls Police 19-years-ago, servig as a patrolman, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and currently as Assistant Police Chief.  He served in the Air Force from 1989 to 1992 and has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Missouri.            

City Council must approve Burn’s appointment.  His estimated start date is October 19.

Barthel will retire in October after a nearly 30-year career with the Sioux Falls Police Department, 12 as Chief, the second longest tenured in that postiion.
