SIOUX FALLS,S;.D. (KELO AM) - Police identify the victim in an fatal shooting early Saturday morning in an apartment on West Briggs Drive as 19-year-old Mikael Mengitsu Ashame.
Captain Blaine Larson says 21-year-old David Randle Junior of Sioux Fall was holding an AK-47 when it fired.
Larson says the people in the room were partying and there was no anger or fighting. He says Randle was handling the weapon and it fired. Ashame was sitting across from Randle and was hit in the leg. The bullet hit a major artery and while Randle and another man tried administering first aid, Ashame died a couple of minutes after he was hit.
The gun belongs to 19-year-old Mason Mitzel who fled the scene but was found later in Brandon along with $30,000 worth of marijuana and hash oil in his car.
Randle is charged with manslaughter. Mitzel faces felony drug possession and distribution charges.
