SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Senator John Thune has introduced legislation banning customer gag clauses that allow businesses to retaliate against scathing online reviews.

Speaking on NBC’s TODAY Show, Thune says the issue is about consumer rights and freedoms.

Thune told NBC reporter Gabe Gutierrez that some businesses practice online bullying by intimidating and creating an atmosphere of fear that a consumer can't express their opinions or views about a product or service online.

The Commerce Committee, that Thune chairs, holds a hearing on online reviews today.

NBC says gag clauses are allowed in every state except California.  Tips to consumers include reading the fine print, don't make up things and don't ignore a company's response to your harsh review.
