SIOUX FALLS (KELO AM) - The National Weather Service is forecasting another significant winter storm for Sioux Falls. The storm will produce snow and high winds lasting through Tuesday. Accumulations could reach 8 inches or more of snow by Tuesday night.
“The Public Works Street Division will be out in full force during this storm. With this much snowfall and high winds predicted, keeping the emergency snow routes clear will be our first priority,” says Galynn Huber, Street and Fleet Operations Manager. “We ask for the public’s patience, since it may be Tuesday before a snow alert is declared and we begin to plow out the neighborhoods.”
During snow alerts, plows enter neighborhoods after the snow has stopped falling and emergency routes are clear. Snow alert communications will include the plowing schedule based on zone. Vehicles cannot be parked legally on the street until the street has been plowed.
Stay safe on the roads by following these tips:
- Listen to weather predictions, and plan to leave home or work earlier to make it to your destination on time.
- Drive with caution. Reduce your speed when snow and/or ice are present on roadways, and allow at least three times the normal following distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- Always clear your entire windshield and other windows of snow and ice before driving. Use your headlights even during the daytime so that other drivers are sure to see you.
- When traveling through construction areas and busy school zones, be especially mindful of your speed and pay careful attention to your surroundings.
- Allow plenty of distance around snow removal equipment. Stay four car lengths behind maintenance vehicles so that the drivers can see you.
- Go to www.siouxfalls.org/snow to subscribe to text, email, or social media notifications when snow alerts are declared and to find helpful information regarding snow removal in Sioux Falls.
