RAPID CITY (KELO AM) -- Five teams from western South Dakota high schools will compete Thursday in Rapid City in a robotics programming competition for the chance to take part in a larger event next spring at the University of South Dakota.
USD's computer science program sponsors the High School Robotic Programming Contest every year in Vermillion and this year added the Rapid City competition. Teams are given parts and instructions ahead of time and must build robots that compete against each other.
The 36th annual Computer Science Programming Competition is in April on the USD campus in Vermillion.The five teams competing Thursday in Rapid City are from four high schools: Todd County on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, Belle Fourth, Lead/Deadwood and Edgemont.USD¹s computer science students recently placed seventh out of 223 teams from more than 60 universities and colleges in a competition, the best among schools in the Dakotas.
The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest is an annual multi-tiered competitive programming competition among universities worldwide. USD took part in a regional ACM event that included schools from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and western Ontario and Manitoba in Canada. USD team members included Kurtis Van Gent, Ben Erickson and Mitchell Peterson.
