Hartford, SD (KELO AM) - The heated political waters in Hartford got even hotter on Monday night when one councilor walked out of the City Council’s regular meeting.
Things were tense from the beginning, when the Council was set to address a threating letter sent to President Doyle Johnson. The letter posed threating statements to Johnson and his family, including a wish for Johnson to choke on a turkey bone so the city could have “real leadership.” The sender of the letter remains a mystery, as the copy that was submitted to the city’s files has the name of the sender removed. Johnson says the letter was written by a prominent Hartford businessperson, but won’t say who.
During the heated discussion that followed, many called for Johnson to resign. Ward 2 representative Mark Monahan walked out of the meeting, leaving the already shorthanded council without a quorum and forcing the meeting to come to a close.
