Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) A Sioux Falls community group is railing against the proposed $3-per-day tax on rental cars and the way City Council is conducting the process.
Activist Bruce Danielson with Citizens For Integrity says it's wrong to tax citizens and visitors to finance a private corporation. The Sioux Falls Development Foundation is pushing the tax as a way to help more rapidly develop Foundation Park, a business/industrial park which will be the biggest in South Dakota history. The Foundation Park is a public/private partnership.
Danielson also claims that City Council went into executive session to plot strategy to get the issue before the voters, which he says is illegal.
The Development Foundation's Dale Froehlich says Foundation Park will improve the city's tax base and generate hundreds of jobs. He says Rapid City, Omaha and other cities have a rental car tax, so why not Sioux Falls.
City Council on Tuesday gets its first official look at the proposed rental car tax.
