SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) – Cinema Falls is rolling out the red carpet to exhibit the 2016 Oscar® Nominated Live Action and Animated Short Films at the Washington Pavilion Belbas Theater at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, and the Oscar® Nominated Documentary Shorts at Icon Lounge + Event Hall at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7.
On Saturday evening, all of the nominated Animated and Live Action Shorts will be screened, and on Sunday, all five nominated Documentary Shorts will be screened. A $30 ticket will admit patrons to the Saturday night double-feature event, which includes an after party. A $15 ticket will admit patrons to the Sunday matinee documentary event, which includes all five nominees with a 10-minute intermission at the halfway point.
“This is our fifth year sharing this event and the Oscar® Shorts program is consistently our most popular program,” said Julie Anderson Friesen, Cinema Falls founder. “I’m thrilled Sioux Falls film lovers and Oscar fans get a chance to see all 15 nominees in advance of the Academy Awards®.”
The Animated Shorts run a total of 86 minutes and include a short by Pixar. The nominees in the Animated category are "Sanjay's Super Team" (d. Sanjay Patel, USA), "World of Tomorrow" (d. Don Hertzfeldt, USA), "Bear Story" (d. Gabriel Osorio, Chile), and "We Can't Live Without Cosmos" (d. Konstantin Bronzit, Russia) and "Prologue" (d. Richard Williams, USA). Additional animated films with awards buzz have been added as a bonus to create a feature length program. The film "Prologue" will screen last with a parental warning issued prior to the film, as it is not suitable for children.
There will be a 10-minute intermission on Saturday evening between the Animated and Live Action Shorts. The Live Action Shorts run a total of 107 minutes and the nominees include “Ave Maria” (d. Basil Khalil), “Shok” (d. Jamie Donoughue), “Everything Will Be Okay” (d. Patrick Vollrath), “Stutterer” (d. Benjamin Cleary) and “Day One” (d. Henry Hughes). This program is unrated.
At Sunday’s matinee, five Documentary Shorts will be screened with an intermission. The nominees include “Body Team 12” (d. David Darg, Liberia), “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” (d. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Pakistan), “Last Day of Freedom” (d. Dee Hibbert-Jones & Nomi Talisman, USA), “Chau, Beyond the Lines” (d. Courtney Marsh, USA/Vietnam) and "Claude Lanzman: Spectres of the Shoah" (d. Adam Benzine, USA). The documentary shorts run a total of 163 minutes. Films are unrated and generally not suitable for children.
“The shorts category offers a perspective of film from the past year that is not Hollywood focused,” Anderson Friesen said. “These films take you around the world with engaging international stories and voices. We guarantee your Academy Awards TV-viewing experience will be changed as a result.”
