Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - A hit and run accident shut sow part of Russel Street in Sioux Falls for a time Saturday night.
Officers responded to the accident near the intersection of Russel Street and Prairie Avenue about 7:30 p.m. Responding Officers located a 2003 Buick SUV that had collided with three street signs and sheared off a wooden power line support in the median of Russell St. The damage left the power pole hanging from the live power line across Russell St and the adjacent service roads.
The driver had fled the scene, but was followed by witnesses to the accident and detained by an off-duty police officer in the area of Bailey St and Dakota Ave.
Both east bound and west bound traffic on W. Russell St between Minnesota Ave and Prairie Ave were blocked off while the power line was repaired.
The driver faces alcohol and hit and run related charges from the incident.
The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation and crews with the Sioux Falls City Street Department and Excel Energy also responded.
