SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - It’s American Heart Month and today is National Wear Red Day.

Cardiologist Dr. Kelly Steffen says it’s important for women to understand the urgency of the problem.

Dr.Steffen says heart disease can be a silent killer because it slowly creeps up on people.  She says women tend to ignore if their not feeling great in favor of taking care of the rest of their family.

Dr. Steffen says a checkup is fully covered by most insurance providers and could signal alarms for future medical issues.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women every year.  The Association asks that you Wear Red today and donate to Go Red for Women.  Your donations help support educational programs that increase women's awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.

On Thursday, February 11th, The American Heart Association in Sioux Falls will host a heart month Twitter chat hosted by South Dakota native Holly Hoffman, who was a competitor on "Survivor."   Also on the 11th, the Association will host a fashion show and benefit.
