SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The House Education Committee today killed a bill requiring a parent’s signature before a South Dakota student could take sex education courses.
Wade Pogany says Associated School Boards has established a sample policy that many districts have adopted.
Pogany says South Dakota parents have the right to remove their child from a sex ed class. He says there would be alternative instruction, they wouldn't just send the child home.
The committee’s majority felt there’s already a policy and the decision should be left to the school board.
Meanwhile...the House State Affairs Committee today deferred a bill designed to enhance customer convenience when buying firearms. The bill also establishes an additional concealed pistol permit.
Eric Matt, representing the South Dakota Firearm’s Association, says one in ten background checks result in a delay. Matt cited as an example: If a potential buyer's name is Adam Smith, there's a lot of Adam Smiths out there, and everytime one tries buying a gun they know they'll be delayed. Matt says there are some things on people's records that need further investigation.
The full, three page bill was first presented in committee today and another hearing is set next week.
