(Pierre, SD) - A bill to ban hydraulic fracking failed its first hurdle in the state legislature. Fracking involves putting high pressure fluid in a well to fracture rocks underground in order to increase oil and natural gas extraction. Those who oppose fracking say the process hurts the environment and threatens water resources. South Dakota Public Broadcasting says State Representative Shawn Bordeaux recently talked about fracking before the House Ag and Natural Resources Committee. Bordeaux says he's concerned about what fracking would do to drinking water and groundwater in South Dakota. He says the Environmental Protection Agency recently confirmed a case in Wyoming where hydraulic fracking contaminated their groundwater. State lawmakers killed the bill by a vote of twelve to one.
