SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -The South Dakota House today considers legislation allowing for handguns with a four-ten shell for hunting game birds.
Tony Leif with Game, Fish and Parks says handgun muzzles aren’t as easy to control as long-barrel guns.
Leif says given the type of hunting that's done in South Dakota, a large group together, the most common accidents have to do with pellets hitting companion hunters.
Representative Dick Werner argues it would give options to hunters who can’t use shoulder-fired guns.
But Leif says handguns aren’t as effective for hunting game birds and could leave some crippled.
He says it would be irresponsible for G,F and P to agree to changing the regulation when all the information found show that this particular short-barreled, shotgun pistol is an ineffective means of harvesting birds.
The measure is scheduled for a House vote today.
