Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) Sioux Falls Schools have been working with the needs of transgendered students long before it became such a hot button issue at the State Legislature.

"We have been able to work with students who have needs, whether they are transgender students, special education students, students who are accelerated in any particular academic area, or somebody who has a broken leg," said Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Maher.

Dr. Maher was on the Greg Belfrage Show Monday morning.

He said that they work with transgendered students the same way they work with all students who have needs that maybe are not  "main stream" needs.

Governor Daugaard is scheduled to meet with some transgendered students on Tuesday, as he mulls over what to do with the bathroom bill passed by the State Legislature. He has said that he wants to listen to all sides of the issue.

If Daugaards signs the bill, South Dakota will become the first state in the nation with a law that requires students to use school bathrooms and locker rooms based on biology not choice.
