Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) -  A single story downtown Sioux Falls restaurant was damage by fire Saturday morning.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of a fire in a single story restaurant located downtown approximately 4:30 AM Saturday.  A passerby noted smoke coming from the building and reported it to 911.

The first arriving fire unit found smoke coming from the restaurant at the corner of 12th Street and Phillips Avenue.  Crews were able to force entry into the structure and cleared the main floor and basement for occupants.  There was a smoldering fire found in the back kitchen area that was quickly extinguished by fire crews.  Crews found heavy smoke in the two businesses exposed to the south and also cleared those businesses for occupants and fire.  There were no occupants in any of the businesses at the time of the fire and no firefighter injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and ATF is assisting with the investigation.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with seven fire trucks, five support vehicles, and thirty-five firefighters.  Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by Sioux Falls Police Department, Paramedics Plus Ambulance, Mid-American Energy, Xcel Energy, and ATF.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind residents that properly installed and operational smoke detectors are the best way to prevent injury and death due to fires.
