SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KJELO AM) - A Sioux Falls man lost $4,000 in an IRS phone scam yesterday.
Officer Sam Clemens says the caller threatened the fifty-five-year-old man with arrest if he didn’t pay and this victim knew he owes Treasury.
Clemens says the victim bought $4,000 worth of green cards, which are redeemable anywhere and not traceable, and gave the numbers to the scammers.
The scammers called the victim again saying that the warrants have been issued and that he'll need to send $17,000. Clemens says that's when he realized he was the victim of a scam.
The IRS doesn't call taxpayers on the phone, they send notices first by mail.
