SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Senate Judiciary Committee today killed a bill allowing concealed pistols in the State Capitol and South Dakota courthouses with an enhanced permit.
Secretary of State Shantel Krebs spoke for the measure saying her staff has concerns. Krebs says sometimes tensions can run high in her office when clients aren't satisfied with staff or their answers. She asked the committee to support her staff's Second Amendment right to conceal-carry and protect themselves in the Capitol.
A South Dakota State Trooper told the committee carrying a gun doesn’t always command control.
The Trooper said it's one thing shooting at a stationary target. He said it's an entirely different matter when someone is shooting back and there's chaos all around. Most law enforcement agencies and organizations in South Dakota oppose the measure.
The committee sent the bill to the 41st day.
It earlier passed the House 45 to 17.
