SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The right to peaceably assemble is protected by the Constitution but in Sioux Falls you need a permit.
Police Sergeant Troy Bruxvoort says there’s a time limit on requests and one group recently cut it close.
Bruxvoort says any gathering of 25 or more people or vehicles requires a permit.
“The purpose of the permit is to ensure there is a plan in place that will provide protection and safety for all Sioux Falls residents, not to discourage assemblies,” says Police Chief Matt Burns. “We will work with any group to make sure all the requirements are met.”
Groups have not been denied permits in the past, but the permitting process takes time. Permits should be requested a minimum of 48 hours before events with less than 500 participants, 30 days for up to 2,500 participants, and 60 days for 2,500 or more.
