SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The world of “The Giver” is portrayed as a utopia but later the sameness becomes dystopian in the Sioux Empire Community Theater’s production opening tonight.
Artistic Director Patrick Pope says society has eliminated pain and strife. There is no pain, but no joy either. When Jonas turns twelve, he's assigned the special role of receiver of memories and he goes to work with the Giver.
Pope says there is no winter, no snow because it's bad for crops, there are no hills because it's hard for trucks to get up and down. The citizenry has fought for making sure that everyone and everything is equal.
“The Giver” is presented in the Anne Zabel Studio Theater in the Orpheum Center.
Tickets are available at Sioux Falls Theater-dot-com, call 360-4800 or at the theater box office. All seats are $13 general admission. The run dates are March 10-20 on Thursdays, Fridays, two performances on Saturdays and matinees on Sundays.
