SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - This is the week where South Dakotans are urged to prepare for severe spring and summer weather.

Sioux Falls forecaster Todd Heitkamp says the key to severe weather is knowing how to act when it happens.

Heitkamp says its important that everyone in your family knows where to go to safety in the event of severe weather.  He says that's not only at your home but at work, traveling in a car or anywhere outside.

A mock tornado drill will be held Wednesday starting with a test watch issued at ten that morning.  In mosts South Dakota communities Wednesday, severe weather sirens will be sounded.

State and local officials will spend the week encouraging residents to start making preparations now.
