Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) Sioux Falls Schools Superintendent Brian Maher prefers not to talk about the politics of the Obama Administration's transgender directive, but he doesn't think the city schools will have to make any changes as a result.
Dr. Maher received the directive on Friday.
"We're going to continue to work to develop guidance for our schools specifically on this topic to see if there is anything specifically different we have to do. I don't think there is," Maher tells KELO Radio.
The U.S. Education and Justice Departments are telling school systems nationwide that transgender students must be allowed to use the bathroom of their gender choice.
Dr. Maher says Sioux Falls makes accomodations for transgender students to use private restrooms in the schools after consultation with the student and the parents.
"In many ways, I think, this is a solution in search of a problem," says Dr. Maher. He says the schools make accomodations for students with all sorts of needs. He says it is not an "insurmountable" problem.
