SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - There's a scam letter targeting seniors referencing a "Minnhehaha County Referendum" in a phoney effort to protect Social Security benefits.
Robert Wilson with the Minnehaha County Commission Office says a resident brought the letter to the county's attention.
Wilson says the letter has been turned over the South Dakota Attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection Division so they could investigate.
Wilson couldn't say how widespread the letters are but emphasize that Minnehaha County is in no way affiliated with it.
Wilsons says the letters indicate recipients have been chosen as part of a "Minnehaha County Referendum." It asks recipients to send money to the National Council for Survivors in support of an effort to protect social security benefits.
