SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) The 2013 Mayor’s Historic Preservation Award is presented to H4j1 Development Companies and Houwman Companies for the rehabilitation and renovation of the property at 300 South Main Avenue. Annually, the Mayor and the Sioux Falls Board of Historic Preservation recognize an individual or property owner with the award, which is presented to those who have demonstrated a commitment to historic preservation through advocacy, education, investment, or service.

Originally known as the Wintersteen Chevrolet Co. building on the corner of 11th Street and Main Avenue, it is now home to Boyce, Greenfield, Pashby & Welk, L.L.P., Attorneys at Law. Built in 1928, it remained a car dealership through the mid-1970s but changed names over the years as ownership changed. In the early 1940s, the building also housed the U.S. Army Technical School for radio training during World War II.

The building’s restoration project began with the removal of the exterior insulation finish system and the bay windows that were installed in the 1980s. The work then moved to the interior space, which was completely renovated.

“This building has such incredible history, and Grant and his team worked so hard to bring back its incredible beauty as well,” says Mayor Mike Huether. “The Mayor’s Historic Preservation Award is a very small way to recognize such an important investment in one of the most visible locations for Downtown Sioux Falls!”

The award was presented to Grant Houwman, a partner with the companies involved in the project.
