SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - We're coming into a meaningful but potentially dangerous holiday and Sioux Falls officials ask you to exercise caution.
Sandy Frentz with the health department says statistically, men are three times more likely to be injured by fireworks than women. She says about 50% of the people injured are under the age of 20. She says a majority of the injuries are related to sparklers, bottlerockets and firecrackers.
Fireworks aside, there are other safety concerns over the upcoming Fourth of July holiday because we'll be outdoors a lot.
Frentz says to make sure that you keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot and watch your own temperature.
She says make sure you stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and keep your alcohol intake low. Give yourself a chance ot have break from the sun. Find a shade tree, preferrably one with a hammock, or go indoors to air conditioning but take a break from the heat.
Frentz advises wearing sun screen and bug spray.
