Frosty Frolics Fun for the Entire Weekend

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) Mother Nature has finally given us a cover of snow and the cold of winter! To help celebrate the winter season, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has a large number of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages planned for the weekend after the New Year. Frosty Frolics Weekend will take place Friday, January 3, through Sunday, January 5, 2014, at various sites around the city. All outdoor events are weather-dependent. All items on schedule are free, unless noted.

Indoor Concert featuring the Goodroad band. Seating is limited.

Holiday Light Tour for Seniors. Take a ride from the community center through holiday-lighted downtown Sioux Falls, stop at Winter Wonderland, and then return to the community center for hot cider and cookies. Two half-hour tours are available, and seating is limited. Rides sponsored by Stellar Limousine. Free, but registration (#390004) is required. Call to secure a seat (367-8222).

Register by December 30.

Saturday, January 4

 

9 a.m.

Frosty Frolics Fun Run/Walk. 1-mile fun run and 5K- and 10K-walk/run.

Register online, #370005*. Register online by December 27 to receive a free T-shirt.

SPENCER PARK,

Southwest side of South Cliff Avenue and I-229

9 to 11 a.m.

Ice fishing derby (Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation partnering with The Outdoor Campus.) Ice fishing poles will be loaned out on a first-come, first-served basis. All ages welcome. A S.D. fishing license is required for ages 16 and older. Free, but registration required, #370004*. Register online by December 30.

FAMILY PARK,

1/2 mile north of 12th Street on the Tea/Ellis Road

1 to 3 p.m.

Guided snowshoe tour. For beginners. Join a 20-minute walk through the arboretum. You might catch a glimpse of wild turkey, bald eagle, deer, waterfowl, and other wildlife. Shoes are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Walks will be limited to 20 minutes. While you wait, take a tour of the classroom while enjoying hot cider and a cookie. This free event sponsored in part by Sun ‘N Fun and The Outdoor Campus.

MARY JO WEGNER ARBORETUM,

(Across from Arrowhead Park)

3 to 5 p.m.

Loppet cross-country ski event. There will be a one-mile loop of even terrain for beginners and a 5K trail of varying terrain for advanced skiers. Must provide own skis. #370006* Register online by December 30.

4 to 5 p.m.

Curling demonstration from Sioux Falls Curling Association.

•  Snow angel contest.

•  Sleigh rides provided by McCrossan Boys Ranch.
