SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - To no one’s surprise, Sioux Falls Police will have more officers on the streets tonight.
Captain Greg VandeKamp says 16 additional officers will patrol between eight tonight and four tomorrow morning. He says most people will start drinking around eight and bars close at two in the morning. He says then there are after bar parties and then activity winds down after four.
He says New Year’s Eve is not the height of D-W-I arrests. He says there are more arrests on other holidays. Vandekamp attributes that to more awareness around this holiday and because there is a fear of getting caught.
Punishment for D-W-I includes a lost license, jail time, fines and fees, not to mention increased insurance premiums.
Captain Vandekamp advises partiers to have a designated driver or take a cab. Triple-A Sioux Falls reminds impaired drivers that they can call 1-800-AAA-HELP and a tow truck will come to the rescue for free - and you don't have to be a Triple-A member.
