SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Beginning next month, fewer drunken people taken off the streets will go to detox in Minnehaha County.
Sheriff Mike Milstead says most intoxicated people will remain under the care of his office. He calls the transition a sweeping change in how the county handles detox. He says it includes a sobering center, a jail infirmary and a medical observation area. He believes the county is improving inmate access to health care.
The County commission today awarded the contract for inmate medical and detoxification services to Armor Correctional Health Services from Miami, Florida.
Milstead says Armor will offer positions they’ll fill locally.
