SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The goal of “Spread the Word to End the Word” is to encourage people to quit saying retard or retarded.
Event planner Jessica Kerher says the word is hurtful to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"Spread the Word to End the Word" is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Best Buddies and supporters worldwide. Kerher says it's intended to engage school organizations and communities to rally and pledge their support to promote the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"Spread the Word to end the Word" was started by college students Soeren Palumbo (Notre Dame) and Tim Shriver (Yale) and continues to be lead by passionate young people.
The effort is observed nationally this Wednesday when you can sign a pledge to not use the R-word.
