VERMILLION, S.D. – The University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine announced today that Susan Anderson, M.D., director of the Frontier and Rural Medicine (FARM) Program, has been named the next chairperson of the Sanford School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine, replacing Dr. Bruce Vogt who will retire in June. Dr. Anderson has been a faculty member in the Family Medicine Department of the USD Sanford School of Medicine since 2000.
Mary Nettleman, M.D., M.S., M.A.C.P., vice president of health affairs and dean of the Sanford School of Medicine, said that Anderson, a 1997 graduate of the School of Medicine, will oversee the department and work effectively and collegially with colleagues in the community and throughout the state to advance the mission of the Family Medicine Department in both rural and urban areas.
“We’re pleased to have Dr. Anderson lead the Department of Family Medicine as her experience with the FARM Program and her knowledge of family medicine are a perfect fit for the Sanford School of Medicine,” Nettleman stated. “Dr. Anderson is a team player with highly developed skills in collaboration, communication and mentorship. She has the ability to inspire and mentor students as well as lead a talented faculty and staff.”
Dr. Anderson, a native of Canistota, S.D., graduated from South Dakota State University in 1992 and graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1997. She was chief resident at the Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency Program and is board certified in Family Medicine while practicing at Sanford USD Physicians Clinic in Sioux Falls and Canistota. She currently serves as medical director of the Canistota Good Samaritan Center.
In addition to serving as director of the FARM Program, Anderson is currently associate professor and vice-chair of Clinical Foundations and Rural Education, director of the Clinical Foundations component of Pillar 1, and a member of Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s Primary Care Task Force and the USD Sanford School of Medicine Alumni Council. She and her husband Matt reside in Canistota and have four children.
