Brookings, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Huffington Post recently mentioned South Dakota State University in an article on their blog titled, "7 Colleges with Awesome Perks."SDSU made the list, not only because of its famous ice cream and dairy bar, but also for its student-run dairy farm and Davis Dairy Plant.

The dairy plant processes more than 18,000 pounds of milk a week into cheese, butter, milk and more than 60 flavors of ice cream. The article was originally written by Clarissa Gallardo, a student at the University of Louisiana At Lafayette, and featured on “The Prospect” blog. It applauded SDSU’s cow-to-cone process, led by professors and carried out by students. The article also noted Food Network Magazine naming SDSU’s cookies ‘n’ cream the best ice cream treat in the state last year. “Yummy ice cream and hands-on experience? Sign me up!”— Gallardo“This article highlights the fact that in today’s competitive world, graduates need to have technical knowledge, as well as hand-on experience in order to be successful professionals,” said Vikram Mistry, professor and head of the dairy science department. “The SDSU Dairy Science program provides the best of both, technical and hands-on experience and prepares student for very rewarding careers. These are indeed 'awesome perks' that should also be considered by high school graduates as they prepare to seek college careers. We invite high school students to visit and get a peek at their future. That, too, looks 'awesome.'"
