Mayor TenHaken outlines Sioux Falls' budget future

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Public safety is a big part of Mayor Paul TenHaken's proposed near-$600 million city budget.

TenHaken wants to buy body cams for every police officer, 150 additional cameras.

"These cameras will record our officers' interactions while carrying out their duties and will help our police force better serve and protect our community."

The mayor is also calling for five new police officers and 15 new firefighters. The firefighters will cover the new fire station to be built on the eastside. And the city will use bonds to build a new state-of-the-art police/fire training academy.

TenHaken says the challenges of COVID-19 have helped the city learn that it must unite to be successful. He developed that theme during his budget speech Tuesday before a special meeting of city council.

"It's our community's financial stewardship, our economic strength and philanthropic heart that has made us successful in the past, and relying on all three will continue to move us forward and ensure a bright future."

The mayor's proposed 2021 budget continues to move forward on roads, parks, innovation,  affordable housing, and mentoring, all part of his 'One Sioux Falls' mantra.

A big percentage of the money will go for the city's ongoing water reclamation expansion to keep pace with population growth and new business.

TenHaken says that his proposed budget will help shape the future of Sioux Falls and he goes on to describe what that future will look like. A future, he says that delivers essential services to everyone, reaffirms a commitment to public safety, and provides reliable roads.

"It looks like a city that invests in our most prized resource, our people."
