Edward Snowden documentary coming to Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, SD - Was NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden a hero? A patriot? A traitor? A dissident? Film fans can draw their own conclusions when Cinema Falls presents the Laura Poitras filmed, edited and produced CITIZENFOUR, the story of the man who returned "Big Brother" to our collective vocabulary. Considered by many critics as the most important documentary of our century and a shoe-in for an Oscar® nomination, the film is slated to kick off the Cinema Falls season this Sunday, January 11th at the West Mall 7 Theatres for a 2PM matinee.

In June of 2013, US journalist and documentarian Laura Poitras began receiving encrypted emails from someone who claimed they had information on the government's surveillance programs. Poitras teamed up with journalist Glenn Greenwald and together they flew to Hong Kong to meet Snowden, and make his revelations public. Footage shot on this trip formed the foundations of a film that seeks an intimate look at Snowden, as well as a perspective on the grander scale of the implications of the NSA programs and the trove of documents he revealed.

"This documentary is a real life espionage thriller in the vein of the 'Bourne' films," says Julie Anderson Friesen, Cinema Falls founder. "It's definitely a film for our time addressing issues about freedom and privacy, and within days of our screening it will likely be named an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature by the Academy." According to the Cinema Falls founder, the matinee slot was selected so film fans wouldn't miss the evening's Golden Globe awards.

CITIZENFOUR was recently crowned Best Feature Documentary of 2014 by the International Documentary Association (IDA), has a Spirit Award nomination for Best Documentary, and a Broadast Film Critic's Choice Award nomination along with a lengthy list of nominations and wins on the film festival circuit.   The film kicks off the Spring 2015 Season for Cinema Falls which was founded in February of 2012. Season subscriptions have tripled since that time, and both individual tickets and season passes may still be purchased.

Rated R with a TRT of 1 hr, 54 minutes. Tickets can be found at www.CinemaFalls.com with no guarantee that tickets will be available at the door. A ticket counter on the ticketing site indicates up to the minute availability. Doors open at 2pm with film start at 2:30pm at the West Mall 7 Theatres.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Election workers won a meager pay raise today from the Minnehaha County Commission.

County Auditor Bob Litz says it’s harder to find poll workers and Commissioner Gerald Beninga says most put in twelve hours of public service.

Precinct superintendents will make $140 a day and deputies $125 a day.  That's $10 more a day.

Meanwhile...the  County Commission today re-elected Cindy Heiberger as Chairperson for the year.

Commissioner Dick Kelly objected saying Jeff Barth should be chairman followed by Kelly.  He said the commission doesn't want to return to the days of one commissioner weilding power over the rest of the body.

Heiberger kept the chair on a three-to-one vote.  Kelly was the lone dissenter.

Driveway snow reduced, not eliminated

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The city says the 5 plus inches of snow in Sioux Falls is about the limit for snow gates.

Street Manager Galen Huber says another 2 to 3 inches of snow and the gates would have been pulled.  He says some snow spilled over the gates reducing, but no eliminating, windrow snow from residential driveways.

Huber says the biggest obstacle grader operators have to contend with is parked cars.  He says it's difficult to manuever around them and raise and lower snow gates.  He says that's how streets become narrower as the snow season continues.

He says snow gates will be used during snow alerts only and not during maintenance.

Police are ticketing cars parked on unplowed streets and owners have 24 hours to get them off the streets or they’ll be towed.

Jackson, MN (KELO AM) – Joseph Patterson turned himself in to authorities in Jackson County, Minnesota today after violating terms of his bond. Patterson was staying there with his father, who has already bailed his son out twice before following charges of manslaughter and kidnaping and assault.

Patterson is accused of killing Tyrese Ruffin, the biological son of Adrian Peterson, back in 2013. Then in September 2014, he was back in jail for assaulting Ruffin’s mother in a Sioux Falls apartment. Both times he was granted bail, and both times his father posted that bail. He is awaiting trial on all of those charges.

Patterson violated the terms of his bond by contacting his ex-girlfriend back on January 3rd. Court documents say Patterson tried calling Ruffin nearly 20 times that day. Ruffin answered one of those calls, she says Patterson told her he still loved her and wanted a relationship. The calls came from a blocked number.
