SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  Senator John Thune isn’t suggesting that the Department of Agriculture is moving too slow to combat avian flu.

Thune says the letter he and Mike Rounds sent to Tom Vilsack yesterday is to let him know they’re paying close attention to the situation.

Thune says he and Rounds want USDA to take whatever steps are neccessary and if that means they have to move money around in their budgets, there would be support for that.

Hundreds of thousands of turkeys in South Dakota have been destroyed because of avian flu

Sioux Falls twins named Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM and KWSN) – Fans of the Minnesota Vikings have been given one more reason to cheer for the purple and gold next season, after it was announced Wednesday that Karmen and Kirsten Nyberg of Sioux Falls will be part of the team’s 35 member cheer squad for the 2015-16 season. The twin sisters have spent a combined 32 years practicing dance and cheering at all levels; including at Sioux Falls Lincoln, Augustana College, and most recently for the Sioux Falls Storm indoor football team.

Current Mitchell High School cheer coach Amanda Gilman spent one year coaching the Nybergs at Sioux Falls Lincoln, and from day one of her tenure with the Patriots she said they were the cornerstone of her squad. “I walked into practice my first day there, and those two girls just stood out to me. First of all because they were just leaders, they had a presence in the gym.” She added their skill set combined with that leadership and presence made Wednesday’s announcement no surprise to her at all, “anything you could pick for a cheerleader, especially on a high school team, those girls had.”

Gilman, who was a cheerleader herself at Parkston High School and also won the 2012 Spirt of Six award at the AA Boys state tournament as coach at Mitchell High School, said as a young coach she still learned a lot from Karmen and Kirsten. “They were always ones to step up and say ‘well coach, this is how we’ve done it in the past’ kind of directing me.”

According to a press release from the Sioux Falls Storm, Kirsten has been dancing for nearly 18 years. She began dancing at age five at a local studio where she took ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop classes. Kirsten also participated in competitive dance and cheerleading for over ten years at the all-star and high school level, and was a four-year member on Augustana’s cheer and dance teams. Karmen has been dancing for 18 years (14 competitively). She was also a member of Augustana’s dance team. Last year the twins were in the running to become members of the Denver Broncos cheer squad.

“If cheer and dance is the direction you want to go, [getting to the NFL] is the ultimate dream” said Gilman. She added all their previous coaches and instructors can take pride in this moment as well. “It’s an incredible thing for those girls, and to think that I coached them in their senior year it’s just really exciting.”

VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO AM) – The University of South Dakota will offer a new program that allows students to study health service administration in Cuba while also learning about the people, art and culture of America’s island neighbor.

The first group of 15 students and their professor will visit Cuba during winter break, visiting hospitals and the university medical clinic, and observing community projects.

“We chose Cuba because it is known around the world for its national health system where all residents have access to cost-effective health care, and because it is a leader in providing health care for nearly a hundred developing countries,” said Professor Carole South-Winter, who teaches health care administration in the USD Beacom School of Business.

“Cuba also has a world-renowned medical training program, making it an ideal location for USD students to compare and examine different health care systems and means of delivery,” she said.

The students will enroll in a course entitled Health Services Administration Abroad, which will cover the formation and operation of public health policies. South-Winter points out that Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than that of the United States and also has a life expectancy of 78 years, one of the best on the American continent.

DeYoung advises residents to call metro communication before burning and give them a heads-up.

Group calling on WC voters to say "No" May 19th

Humboldt, SD (KELO AM) - The “Save our Future” group is rallying voters in Humboldt and Hartford to overrule the West Central School Board’s decision to turn over the Cherry Lake addition to the Sioux Falls School district, saying it is an opportunity to grow their district they way Tea, Brandon, and Harrisburg have in recent years.

The group’s Lisa Engels says the estimated tax value of the Cherry Lake addition is around $100 million, which would prove helpful if the district decides to put an elementary school in Sioux Falls. “That’s much more easily done with that $100 million property tax value within our district, as opposed to letting it go and later on figuring out that we need a building over there anyway.” Engels said. According to the group the value of the addition represents 20% of West Central’s tax base.

She added that it would benefit residents in the area that are already in the West Central district, allowing them to send their kids to elementary school close to home without driving to Humboldt or Hartford. “We need to decide if we want to take care of these families that are coming into our district as Sioux Falls grows. That means we need to provide an elementary school building that’s close to where those families live.”

Voters in the district will head to the polls on May 19th to decide the fate of the Cherry Lake addition. A no vote would keep the addition in the West Central school district, voting yes would leave the school board’s decision as is.
